Trust Me, I'm a Doctor
by Jeff Cordeiro
Most of us were raised to trust
"authorities". A recent study even showed that, when it comes to health, most people cannot begin to heal until they’ve made a trip to the doctor’s office. Strangely enough,
the study showed that healing actually begins the minute
we step into the waiting room. Maybe it’s the faith we place in
doctors or maybe it's the stress relieved by believing a cure is just around the corner. Regardless of the cause, the healing begins before the doctor does anything.
It is important to realize that it is your body’s immune system that always does the healing. It is equally important to realize that medicines do not heal – they treat symptoms (fever, pain, congestion, etc.). Recent master studies (studies that compile the results of previous studies done on given subjects) have
shown that flu vaccinations do not even reduce the likelihood of contracting the flu, nor do they lessen the severity of the symptoms, nor do they speed recovery from the flu.
There’s an old joke: A man goes to the doctor with the flu and asks “How long
before I'm better?” The doctor replies “If you take your medicine, you should recover in about a week,
otherwise, it will take about seven days”.
So what if we take medicines just to “feel better” while we heal? No harm in that, right? Not really. The fever, coughs, and sniffles that your body produces are actually mechanisms your body uses to heal itself and
expel toxins. By
relieving the “symptoms” you are handcuffing the body’s ability to heal.
For instance, a runny nose or a scratchy throat are caused by the hairs in your nose and throat catching foreign
invaders, followed by the addition of various fluids that gather up the intruders
for flushing out the nearest escape hatch. When that isn’t enough, the body will adjust your temperature (a fever) to make the environment inhospitable to your uninvited guests. Then there are more violent and less comfortable methods of eviction. I won’t go into details but you get the idea.
The reason a person gets “sick” is due to the fact that the immune system was compromised in the first place. When our bodies get all of the essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.) it requires, every cell in our body functions
correctly. When it doesn’t get what it needs, cells can malfunction.
Think of your body as high performance sports car. Keep it in tip top shape and you will maneuver through life beautifully. It will even perform for quite a while on low-grade fuel, even though it was designed for high octane.
However, if you continue to neglect it, forget to tune up the engine or change the oil, don’t inflate the tires properly, and overload the trunk, it
will break down or, worse yet, crash.
Medicines actually drain the body of nutrients. On top of that,
residual medical toxins are stored in your fat, just like lead,
mercury (which is contained in vaccines, click to see how mercury
damages the brain), pesticides and hundreds of other poisons.
So, with every medication taken, it becomes just a bit easier to fall prey
to another ailment and just a bit tougher to heal.
To get your body back in tip top condition, you must detoxify your system. The easiest way to do this is by providing your body with all of the nutrients it
needs. The longer you fuel your vehicle with low octane, the more gunk
builds up in your engine and the more performance diminishes. However, as soon as you fill ‘er up with premium, performance will
start to improve and harmful deposits will begin to be purged. It will be out with the bad and in with the good, which is why people lose weight when they detox – the body is actually throwing out the garbage.
Just make sure you drink lots of filtered water to aid the process.
So, how effective are nutrients at helping the body heal? Here are some examples citing vitamin C's benefits on infectious diseases like the flu:
- Journal
of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 1999 found
that vitamin C in megadoses administered before or after the
appearance of cold and flu symptoms relieved and prevented the
symptoms in the test population compared with the control group.
- The
Clinical Experiences of Frederick R. Klenner, MD states that cases
of influenza, encephalitis, and measles were easily cured with vitamin
C injections and oral doses.
- Orthomed.com
– Dr. Robert Cathcart, MD, explains the science behind treating the flu with massive doses of vitamin C and offers a personal case
study where intravenous administration of vitamin C saved the life of a child with acute flu complications.
Now, consider the case of a New Zealand farmer who went to Fiji for a holiday and
developed flu-like symptoms. It turned out to be the swine flu. According to Dr. Thomas E. Levy, M.D.,
J.D. (author of several books, including Curing the Incurable: Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and
Toxins), hospitals were unable to help him. The farmer's condition deteriorated, despite the use of Tamiflu and antibiotics.
Doctors tried every medical treatment they could think of but to no avail. The
farmer fell into a coma.
The man's family was finally told nothing more could be done and that life support would be switched off. The family said NO – not until everything had been tried. They
pushed the hospital to give him intravenous vitamin C and the
hospital reluctantly agreed. To the medical staff’s surprise, the patient began to recover. It wasn’t long before the patient regained consciousness and began breathing on his own.
Obviously, this is an extreme case but it illustrates just how important it can
be to get the proper nutrients and how difficult it can be to get
doctors to look at options outside of prescription drugs.
Were these doctors to blame? Not entirely. Unfortunately, medical doctors are only given about four hours of education on nutrition during their schooling and hundreds and hundreds of hours
on which drugs treat which symptoms.
It has gotten so bad that, recently, 200 Harvard Medical students confronted the school’s administration, and demanded an end to the pharmaceutical industry’s influence in the classroom. Of Harvard's 8,900 professors and lecturers, 1,600 admitted that they or a family member had ties to drug companies. The pharmaceutical industry contributed more than $11.5 million to Harvard in 2008 alone. For the full New York Times article,

To make matters worse, pharmaceutical companies routinely instruct their army of sales people to promote non-approved alternative uses for approved drugs. So,
to boost sales, your doctor may be told to prescribe medications for illnesses
specific drugs were never intended for.
The September 2, 2009 edition of USA Today reported that pharmaceutical giant Pfizer must pay $2.3
billion, the largest health care fraud settlement in history, to resolve criminal and civil allegations that the company illegally promoted uses of four of its drugs. That sounds like a ridiculous amount to pay until you realize Pfizer reported profits of over $2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2009 alone.
Drug companies use all sorts of tactics to “sell” their drugs to doctors; from research grants and medical education courses they
sponsor, to
funding small trials of their own drugs and publishing the results
if, and only if, the news is positive.
The drug companies spend an estimated $18.5 billion (eight times the Pfizer fine) annually to promote their drugs. Summary of Product Characteristics
(SPC) – the information given to physicians about drugs – can be so unclear that, according to one recent study, it was impossible for physicians to determine the licensing status
on one in five drugs, which makes it’s even more likely they will rely on
the drug reps opinions and suggestions.
Unfortunately, shady marketing is not limited to big drug
companies. Synthesized vitamins may or may not be in the correct molecular form for proper assimilation (the wrong forms
can actually cause oxidative stress rather than relieve it). Also remember that no single nutrient is the answer.
Vitamins, minerals and enzymes must all be present in the right forms, in the right amounts and at the right times to do their jobs.
So, the best way for you to get what your body needs is to get it directly from nature. In the case of vitamin
C and most other nutrients, that would be from food (fresh, local, organic sources, of course).
To maximize your results, be sure to eat
foods for your type.
There also seems to be quite a vitamin B deficiency in this country. One study found that 25% of middle-age men were deficient in vitamin B6, 56%
in B12, and 59% in folic acid
(Ubbink JB, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Jan 1993;57: 47-53.). Once again, this is related to diet and digestion. Stress, processed foods, refined sugar (the average person consumes 140 pounds of sugar each year), drugs (both recreational and prescription), toxins, malnutrition (not enough
essential nutrients – not to be confused with not enough food) and cooking (which kills vitamins and
enzymes) all rob your body of the building blocks it needs to function.
Vitamin D is also very important for good health (most American’s are terribly deficient in vitamin D)
but it is one nutrient that doesn't come from food. Fortunately, your free supply
is right outside your door. All you have to do is expose yourself to the sun
correctly (at midday without sunscreen), and that will create all the vitamin D your
body needs. How important is getting enough sun? Not only are there fewer and fewer cases of the flu the closer you get to the equator (where people get more sun) but there are also fewer and fewer cases of cancer.
Also, do not take Vitamin A supplements or cod liver oil. Recent studies show
that Vitamin A supplements may negate the health benefits of Vitamin D. Instead,
get your Vitamin A by eating colorful vegetables. The body will produce the
precise amount of Vitamin A it needs from the beta-carotene contained in the
vegetables.
The bottom line, as usual, is to trust nature. Provide your body with the basics it needs and it will provide you with a long and healthy life.
As always, I hope you found this article beneficial and thought-provoking.
